Congrats to July’s Member of the Month! Marni L!
Marni Lyons
Age?- 44
Where are you from?- She was born in Salt Lake City, UT but raised in San Clemente, CA
Occupation?- Marni runs an agency that operates treatment centers for teens in Grand Junction and Delta
Family members, do they also crossfit?- Yes, both of her daughters do crossfit and both started at Agoge
How long have you been doing CrossFit? How did you come to join this box?- She started shortly after the gym opened at its current Water Ave location. Originally Marni was training at Anytime Fitness with some friends of John Brown. Her trainer suggested she check out Agoge for her daughters. She went to an Open House hosted by Agoge and was completely “mesmerized” by the lack of treadmills and ellipticals! She kept coming back to the event with different folks (she said trying to pretend she was a “different person”) and John kept talking to her. She couldn’t stop thinking about and eventually tried it and was hooked!
Fav WOD (benchmark, hero, girl, etc); fav movement?- “Grace” or “DT”; Deadlift
Least fav WOD; least fav movement?- “Kelly”; Snatch
Area of greatest improvement?- Double Unders and being able to do anything involving gymnastics
Background ( did you participate in athletics)?- She played lots of different sports growing up
Biggest reservation prior to joining?- Not believing that crossfit could be for everybody
And after you started were you right or was it a preconceived notion that turned out to be wrong)?- yes, it is for anyone!
Particular way you eat (paleo, gluten free, zone, none of he above, etc)?- Prefer gluten free, predominately paleo with more of an emphasis on protein and fats
Favorite guilty pleasure food or drink?- Chips and salsa and margaritas!
Biggest change you experienced since joining Agoge?- An all around lifestyle change including cooking from scratch, eliminating smoking and fast food
Goals for the future (in or out of the gym)?- to limit my suffering (via a podcast she recently heard) and to get back to eating in a way that would allow her to get off blood pressure meds
What advice would you give someone on the fence about starting crossfit?- Just do it, take the chance. Come and watch and then try it
Favorite John Brownism- censored via Marni: regardless of gender “You will be bringing a stick and he will be dragging it through the dirt.”
